NASA Space Elevator: Elevator To Space
By:
Published: July 23, 2007
Imagine this scenario if possible. A large cable stretching up into the vast sky above our heads in which the end of it would not be visible. The end of this cable would be at a station in space, and attached to the cable would be a transporter car. It's hard to believe and it sounds a lot like a science fiction movie, but it is something that could be a possibility in the not so distant future due to innovation in space technology and further development of these plans.
This experiment is known to the world as the space elevator. The space elevator is a megastructure that is designed to be a direct transport between Earth and space. The space elevator would be used to transport materials and people up into space and would cut back on the use of rockets that do those jobs now. NASA has funded a grant to look into the real possibility of building a space elevator and now more than ever it seems like a reality. There are many companies signing on to join NASA in the project. Many of these companies will be responsible for the production of materials to build the elevator to space.
One company that is looking into the development of the space elevator is the Liftport group. The Liftport group proposes the idea of the space elevator by having lightweight, strong materials called carbon nanotubes attached to the Earth's surface at a special Liftport Station. This station will then be connected to a separate station that is already in space. This elevator would be kept in balance through the centrifugal effect that the Earth's rotation provides and a small satellite that would be attached to the line as counterweight. There then would be robotic elevator cars that would transport in between the space station and the Liftport Station on Earth. Currently, the Liftport group is developing the nuts and bolts that would be used in the elevator's construction and also testing the carbon nanotubes to see how well they operate in space.
The Liftport Group, which was founded in 2003, is convinced that the space elevator will open up new innovative ideas for the world. This is mostly based on Liftport's idea that the space elevator will be a financial success and will introduce ventures that haven't even been thought of yet because there is no space elevator. Once an elevator to space is built then entrepreneurs everywhere will have a whole new environment to work with and build around.
The space elevator is an exciting venture and will open up doors that were never thought possible before. A place that always seemed so unreachable would now only be an elevator away. Now with new discoveries and companies signing on to build it, the space elevator is looking more like a reality each and every day.
